God's role and our role in choosing a President in 2020
"For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places." (Ephesians 6:12)

We Americans often think that we choose our President. However, God's word says, "the Most High is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and gives them to anyone He wishes." (Daniel 4:25)
Unfortunately, we are a nation in rebellion against the Most High God and as a result are coming under His judgment. (See "The Onion Hypothesis of Economics" and "God's judgment on America." Those essays were written in 2009 and 2010; the situation has gotten worse since then.) The deliberate killing of more than 60 million innocent human beings and the proliferation of sexual immorality are just two of our many national sins. Aborticide (induced abortion, as contrasted with spontaneous abortion, or miscarriage) is one of the greatest evils of our day.
Perhaps the Covid-19 pandemic and the unraveling of civilization are part of our national punishment. I am not saying that God caused these curses, but He allowed them. Although individual exceptions may exist, as a nation we have not been living in a way that would encourage God to bless us. If God judges America in the manner He judged ancient Israel (see Leviticus 26 and Deuteronomy 28), we can expect the punishment to continue to intensify until we repent.
God's judgment
In addition to idolatry, one of the reasons that God brought destruction and captivity on the ancient nations of Israel and Judah was the shedding of innocent blood. God hates hands that shed innocent blood (Proverbs 6:16-17).
2 Kings 17:7-8,17-18 says, "For so it was that the children of Israel had sinned against the Lord their God, who had brought them up out of the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and they had feared other gods, and had walked in the statutes of the nations whom the Lord had cast out from before the children of Israel, and of the kings of Israel, which they had made. And they caused their sons and daughters to pass through the fire, practiced witchcraft and soothsaying, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger. Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel, and removed them from His sight; there was none left but the tribe of Judah alone."
2 Kings 24:1-4 says, "In his days Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up, and Jehoiakim became his vassal for three years. Then he turned and rebelled against him. And the Lord sent against him raiding bands of Chaldeans, bands of Syrians, bands of Moabites, and bands of the people of Ammon; He sent them against Judah to destroy it, according to the word of the Lord which He had spoken by His servants the prophets. Surely at the commandment of the Lord this came upon Judah, to remove them from His sight because of the sins of Manasseh, according to all that he had done, and also because of the innocent blood that he had shed; for he had filled Jerusalem with innocent blood, which the Lord would not pardon."
Our choice
Now it appears that our choice is between two candidates. One candidate openly supports the continued decriminalization of aborticide and is endorsed by Planned Parenthood. Pro-Life leaders say Biden-Harris is "the most pro-abortion presidential ticket in history." The other candidate claims to be pro-life but supports Planned Parenthood. Each year since Donald Trump became President he has signed legislation giving more than $500 million to that organization. Although he has given pro-life speeches, attended the March for Life, and defunded pro-abortion WHO and United Nations Population Fund, he has opposed the abolition of aborticide and has appointed anti-abolitionists Neil Gorsuch and Brent Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court. And the Trump Administration has made grants totaling nearly $2 billion in support of development of COVID-19 vaccines using fetal cell lines.
A holocaust of children in the womb is underway. A vote for Joe Biden or Donald Trump—or for Jo Jorgensen or Howie Hawkins—is a vote to continue the Aborticide Holocaust. If enough American Christians took an uncompromising stand for righteousness and against evil, this holocaust would end. Independent presidential candidiate Tom Hoefling, who ran in 2012 and 2016 and is running again in 2020, pledges, "I will shut down every abortion facility in the country."
What does God have to say about choosing the lesser of two evils? You can search the Holy Bible from Genesis to Revelation, and nowhere will you find a command to choose the lesser of two evils. On the contrary, the word of God repeatedly says, "Depart from evil!" (See, for example, Psalm 34:14, Psalm 37:27, and Proverbs 3:7. The lesser of two evils is still evil.
History gives us an example of what can happen when voters choose the lesser evil. Tom Hoefling wrote in September 2016:
God rules and reigns over all. That knowledge makes all the turmoil we see around us seem rather trivial by comparison. My reading of history is that when a people descends to the state of moral corruption in which they are willing to support what they openly admit is evil, based on the abject fear of some supposedly "greater" evil, God tends to give that people over to the power of their feared "greater" evil, and to the power of their assumed "lesser" evil as well. The 1932 German election is the classic example. It was considered to be a "lesser of three evils" election between the corrupt, weak, aged Field Marshall Hindenburg, Hitler, and a communist. They chose the "lesser evil," Hindenburg. Within a month the weakling Hindenburg had handed power over to Hitler and the Nazi Party. They ruled the country with an iron fist for more than a decade, until millions were dead, and the nation, along with most of Europe, was laid waste. Then a large portion of the country was given over to the communists for a generation. This is what happens when a people abandons God, and moral principle, and fails to raise up and empower decent principled leaders. Tyranny can only rise when there is a moral vacuum of true leadership in politics.
Our role
I realize that it takes faith to vote for Tom Hoefling and trust in God to control the outcome, and I try to avoid being judgmental of persons who choose to vote for Trump or Biden as the "lesser of two evils." Each of us has to examine our conscience, realizing that God will judge our motive regardless of which course we choose to take.
John Quincy Adams said: "Duty is ours; results are God's."
For the atheist, what I have written will make no sense. If there is no God, then there is no Supreme Being who is overseeing the fate of men and nations. If, however, the Most High is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and gives them to anyone He wishes, we can realize that God is large and in charge, and we can act in faith not fear. "Perfect love casts out fear (1 John 4:18).
What you can do
If you believe in God and would like to see an end to the Aborticide Holocaust:
- Pray.
- Pray for God's kingdom to come (Matthew 6:10).
- Pray for a spiritual revival, another Great Awakening (Psalm 85:6; Proverbs 14:34).
- Pray for an end to the Aborticide Holocaust (Proverbs 6:16-17; 2 Kings 24:3-4; Jeremiah 22:3).
- Pray for the President and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence (1 Timothy 2:1-2).
- Speak up.
- Let candidates know that if they want your support they need to support abolition.
- For example, you might send a message to https://www.whitehouse.gov/contact encouraging President Trump to enforce the right-to-life provisions of the 5th and 14 Amendments by issuing an executive order to shut down every abortion facility in the country. Be polite but firm. Use your own words. The comment webform at the Whitehouse website appears to have a limit of 2,019 characters. For talking points and guidelines for promoting the personhood of the preborn, see Personhood Talking Points and Personhood Campaign Guidelines. For a sample message that contains 2,015 characters, click here.
- Vote.
- If you are eligible to vote, I encourage you to vote for the only Presidential candidate who is publicly committed to abolishing aborticide: Tom Hoefling. He is certified as a write-in candidate in most states.
- Look for other abolitionists who are running for public office.
Conclusion
Morality trumps politics because obedience to God trumps everything.
