Note on personhood and the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution

In recent years the pro-life movement has placed increased emphasis on the personhood of all human beings. Personhood was a crucial issue in Roe v. Wade. Justice Harry Blackmun wrote, “If this suggestion of personhood is established, the appellant’s case, of course, collapses, for the fetus’ right to life would then be guaranteed specifically by the Amendment.”

Questions

  1. Should the State Constitution be amended to provide that: "Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State?"
  2. Should parents who educate their children in non-public schools be eligible for a tax credit, voucher, or tax deduction from the state?
  3. Should organizations that provide abortions be allowed to receive state funds?
  4. Should it be legal for human embryos to be used for research purposes?
  5. Should it be legal for a medical professional to assist another person in ending their life?
  6. Should homosexuals as a group receive the same special legal protections against discrimination in areas like employment and housing as those given to other groups based on characteristics such as race, color, religion, sex, national origin, or disability?
  7. Do you support a personhood amendment to the North Carolina Constitution? (An example of such an amendment is as follows:
Sec. 38. Person defined. As used in sections 1 and 19 of article I of the state constitution, the terms "person" or "persons" shall include any human being from the moment of conception. Conception is defined as "fertilization or the functional equivalent thereof.")
  8. Do you support redistricting in NC that creates simple, compact districts that don't favor one party over another?
  9. Do you support making it easier for candidates who are not Democrat, Republican, or Libertarian to run for public office in NC?
  10. Do you support nullifying the Obamacare individual mandate in North Carolina?
  11. Do you support freedom of religion re prayers offered in the NC General Assembly (for example, no ban on praying in the name of Jesus)?
  12. Do you support legislation requiring that genetically engineered foods sold in NC be labeled as such?
(This would be similar to Proposition 37, which is on the general election ballot in California this year.)
